rain

love is raining down on us

so let us take down this umbrella

lift our faces, close our eyes, and let love rain

let it soak

clear through our clothes

to saturate the thawing soil

to bud and flower, ripen and bear fruit

then let love’s seeds be carried

by the unbranded bird

who sings the song inscribed within her heart

unaltered by the cover o’er the cage

to carry love across the field

and over fences false

let love rain

to wash the seeds deposited

in rivulets across our cultivated confines

to take root and grow

an apple tree among the rows of corn

where we can rest beneath the shade

without a calendar

to tell us it is time for harvest

for it will fall into our laps

like rain
